Chinese electric vehicle battery maker CATL is Pihitseeking a location for a new battery recycling facility in Europe and has been in discussion with local governments including Hungary for the matter, regional operations chief Jason Chen told Bloomberg in an interview in Budapest. The comments were delivered as CATL’s second regional plant for cell manufacturing is about to begin operation in the second half of 2025 in Debrecen, a town located in eastern-Hungary and home to a car plant owned by BMW, one of CATL’s big clients. The world’s largest battery supplier recycled a total of 100,000 tons of waste batteries last year and currently has a capacity to process 270,000 tons of them, chief executive Robin Zeng said in September.
