Classic speedruns
These are some of the most popular games in speedrunning, whether they are quick romps through beloved games, technically impressive runs that require players to hone their skills over several years, or a combination of both.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D-- Jan. 8 at 1:08 p.m. ET
Ocarina of Timeis widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made and the 3DS remake of the Nintendo 64 classic is one of the first runs of AGDQ. This won't be one of those glitch-filled runs popular to the N64 version--this run will complete every dungeon in the game.
Current record held: 1:53:44, BenStephens56.
Mega Man-- Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. ET
This classic NES game requires a lot of precise platforming and memorization of enemy movements paired with some deep knowledge of glitch exploits. The Mega Manspeed run will be a race between four players.
Current record held: 18:55, CoolKid.
Super Mario Kart-- Jan. 8 at 8:46 p.m. ET
The very first Mario Kartis not an easy game to speedrun. Runners have to plot their paths perfectly and utilize every possible shortcut in the game's courses to get a good time. This run will be a time trail race between two players.
Ninja Gaiden-- Jan. 10 at 12:01 a.m. ET
Via GiphyNinja Gaiden is a very difficult game to beat, let alone to race through at top speed. The players in this speedrun are completing the game without killing any enemies (except bosses), meaning they have to continuously dodge and avoid the deluge of enemies they will encounter in the quick playthrough.
Current record held: 14:48, GusMancini.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes-- Jan. 10 at 11:55 a.m.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoesis no stranger to speedruns, and this particular run will showcase just how broken the game can get. The runner for Echoeswill likely beat the game at only 6 percent completion by avoiding most of the game with glitches and exploits.
Current record held: 1:17:00, Claris.
Super Mario Bros.-- Jan. 10 at 8:37 p.m. ET
Super Mario Bros. is the most classic of the classics. By using a number of pixel-perfect tricks, manipulations and exploits, three runners will race their Mario sprites to the finish line without using the famous warp pipes. Some players will follow with a run of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, which was only released in Japan.
Current record held: 19:04 and 380ms, Darbian.
Castlevania-- Jan. 11 at 3:25 p.m. ET
Castlevaniaspeedrunners use a lot of pixel-perfect tricks to race through the 8-bit, horror-themed stages. After two players race through Castlevaniaat AGDQ 2017, other runners will follow up with another great game from the series, Super Castlevania IV.
Current record held: 11:37 and 964ms, KMac.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-- Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. ET
Via GiphyAnother highly praised Legend of Zelda game, A Link to the Past is a top-down dungeon crawler that requires a lot a of memorization of level layouts and item optimization to properly speedrun. Four runners will race to finish using different paths, making this a particularly interesting run for the week.
Current record held: 1:23:19, Xelna.
Contra-- Jan. 13 at 11:38 a.m. ET
If you look up "run and gun" in the dictionary, there's a picture of Contranext to it. Runners need to memorize exactly where to jump and aim their gun as they button-mash through this enemy-filled NES game. Two runners will face off against each other in this speedrun.
Current record held: 9:53, DK28.
Super Metroid-- Jan. 14 at 10:28 p.m. ET
Generally considered the crown jewel of speedrunning, Super Metroidrequires precise platforming and level memorization like no other classic game. With a newer, better-optimized route, four runners will race each other to see who can beat the game fastest while collecting 100 percent of the items.
Current record held: 1:14:52, Behemoth.
New speedruns
These games are brand new and, for some, it'll be their first time featured at a major speedrunning event. The strategies and exploits these speedrunners have found in such a short time are a true testament to their dedication to beating games as fast as possible.
Salt and Sanctuary-- Jan. 9 at 10:02 a.m. ET
Salt and Sanctuaryis regularly likened to a 2D Dark Soulsbecause of its gritty style and difficulty. This run will skip past a bunch of enemies but still require the runner to defeat all the bosses in the game.
Current record held: 33:42, Paerux.
Doom-- Jan. 10 at 7:17 p.m. ET
Via GiphyThis hyper-fast and super-gory modern take on the Doom series is rife with exploits and glitches. This run will also focus on skipping a lot of enemies, as players launch past hordes of demons to complete the game in near-record time.
Current record held: 43:01 (with load times), Pafi.
Hyper Light Drifter-- Jan. 11 at 11:16 a.m. ET
Hyper Light Drifteris a top-down, colorful rogue-like known for its fast pace and difficulty. This particular run will be a new game + run, meaning the runner will have most of their upgrades available to them but only two health, making the run that much harder.
Current record held: 25:22, Munchakoopas.
Dark Souls 3-- Jan. 14 at 5:06 p.m. ET
The latest game in the Dark Soulsseries has quite a few bugs that allow speedrunners to glitch through walls and navigate the game world while avoiding tons of enemies. Paired with very tactical boss battles, the run is expected to finish in under an hour.
Current record held: 35:44, Nemz38.
Undertale-- Jan. 14 at 11:58 p.m. ET
Via GiphyUndertale was a surprise hit in 2016 -- it's a bizarre mix of comedic characters and situations, unique gameplay and multiple different endings based on players' decisions. This is a unique speedrun and aims for the True Pacifist ending, which requires the runner to refrain from killing (almost) all enemies instead befriending or helping them.
Current record held: 1:26:47, TGH.
Funny speedruns
Some speedruns aren't meant to be taken too seriously, at least game-wise. There will be a handful of funny games at AGDQ this year -- most of them unintentionally so. Some of these games are poorly made, some of them are unofficial bootlegs, and some of them are just plain weird.
Mario Paint-- Jan. 9 at 2:33 p.m. ET
Within Mario Paintis a minigame called Gnat Attack, which tasks players with swatting bugs using the SNES mouse peripheral. It's weird and can be completed in under five minutes, but has a great soundtrack.
Current record held: 4:19, DoDeChehedron.
Cheetahmen (Action 52)-- Jan. 12 at 3:26 a.m. ET
Via GiphyCheetahmenis a poorly-designed subgame within the poorly-designed NES game called Action 52. It's rife with issues like misnumbered levels and instant death if the part-cheetah, part-human characters jump too high.
Current record held: 3:33, Huey.
Donkey Kong 5: The Journey of Over Time and Space-- Jan. 12 at 5:02 a.m. ET
Nintendo never even released a Donkey Kong 4, so why did they publish a fifth game? They didn't -- Donkey Kong 5is an infamous bootleg that is more of a Mariorip-off than anything, but uses Donkey Kongsprites. It's a funny bootleg, but it's also full of problems.
Current record held: 5:11 and 380ms, CupNoodle.
Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure-- Jan. 14 at 7:11 a.m. ET
This re-skin of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4includes unlockable skaters like Buzz Lightyear and Lil' Romeo (yes, Lil' Romeo), and features Disney-themed levels such as the Elephant Graveyard from Lion Kingand a vine-filled jungle from Tarzan. The runners will be collecting every skater as fast as possible in this weird mishmash of Disney IPs.
Current record held: 16:46, Redmoss.
Honorable mentions
These are games that didn't quite fit in the other categories but are still worth a watch. Whether they're popular, glitch-filled, unique or especially difficult, these speedruns should be a lot of fun to watch.
Super Monkey Ball 2-- Jan. 9 at 6:07 p.m. ET
Via GiphyInstead of moving their character around levels, Super Monkey Ball 2has players move the levels around to get the ball-trapped monkey through the goal lines. Some of the levels are pretty intense and require some really careful movement but are still completed in very short times.
Current record held: 30:33, JCool114.
Super Smash Bros. Melee-- Jan. 10 at 10:50 a.m. ET
It's possible to speedrun Super Smash Bros. Melee? Yes, by completing all the game's single-player events. By only unlocking certain characters, speedrunners can limit which enemies they'll meet in their race through the 51 events while still allowing them to pick the most useful ones (read: Jigglypuff).
Current record held: 34:53 and 880ms, Fuzzyness.
Fallout: New Vegas-- Jan. 10 at 3:40 p.m. ET
Fallout: New Vegasis very buggy, allowing speedrunners to glitch through walls and manipulate their movement speed to move through the game at completely unintended speeds. If you're a fan of New Vegas, this run will either impress you or horrify you.
Current record held: 17:14 (with load times), KungKobra.
Trauma Center: New Blood-- Jan. 12 at 10:52 a.m. ET
Via GiphyTrauma Center: New Bloodis one of the few games at AGDQ that utilizes the motion function of the Wii remote. Playing as surgeons, speedrunners have to point the Wii remote at the screen to fix injured peoples' wounds as quickly as possible. It's a little gross but amazing to see how quickly speedrunners can move through the game.
Current record held: 1:45:56, IrisJoker and SlurpeeNinja.
Donkey Kong CountryTrilogy Relay-- Jan. 13 at 10 p.m. ET
Three teams of three will race through the Donkey Kong Countrytrilogy, moving through the difficult SNES side-scrollers one at a time and handing the controller to their waiting teammate for the next game. The DKCgames make for fun speedruns by themselves, but the relay competition puts a fun spin on the classic games.
TASBot plays games-- Jan. 14 at 4:05 p.m. ET
TAS stands for tool-assisted speedrun. A TASBot essentially runs through a pre-determined list of controls set up beforehand, allowing the bot to run through games faster than any human possibly could or overwhelming games with so many inputs that it completely changes the nature of some games. TASBot is scheduled to take on a bunch of different classic games and the NES Classic itself.
